Tasting Notes: Blackberry, raspberry and other brambly fruit characteristic of Alexander Valley. "Graham crust" undertones typical of our Home Ranch terroir. Subtle hints of oak, briary acidity and soft, ripe fruit tannins.
Galaxy Notes: 85% Zinfandel, 15% Petite Sirah. Single vineyard bottling. Barrel aged 13 months in 20% new French oak; neutral barrels were a mixture of French and American oak. 100% small lot, punched-down fermentation; 9-day maceration. In 1893, newlyweds Edoardo and Angela Seghesio purchased their first home in Alexander Valley. As winemaker for the most prominent winery in Sonoma County, Edoardo recognized great vineyard potential surrounding the modest home. In 1895, he planted the Home Ranch vineyard and began the Seghesio tradition of Sharing Uncommon Ground. Long, warm days aided by the absence of marine influence marks this site. The soils are composed of clay and clay loam with underlying layers of basalt, sandstone and volcanic rock. Vines are challenged by the low nutrient level of the clay and the shallow topsoil, which both force them to produce more concentrated fruit.
